Getting Around Monterey
There are many ways for visitors to Monterey, CA, to navigate the downtown area. Buses, trains, and trolleys provide transportation that will fit into any traveler's budget comfortably.
The Wave Trolleys
The most unique Monterey transportation option is the Wave MST Trolley system that runs between some of the most interesting destinations in downtown Monterey. The trolleys depart from different downtown locations every 10 - 15 minutes. There is no charge to ride the trolleys. You can use a trolley to get around in downtown, or you can take a trolley from downtown to popular places like Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row and then back to the downtown stop where you first began. The trolleys will save you time and money, as well as the stress of trying to navigate unfamiliar busy city streets.
Bus Services
Monterey is also home to a well-organized bus transit system that runs throughout the city. For a small fee, you can take an air-conditioned bus to several different downtown locations from hotels that are located outside of the downtown area. Monterey's buses also serve the same popular tourist destinations that the trolleys serve, though they may be a little more comfortable than the open-air trolleys on warm summer days.
Passenger Trains
AMTRAK operates a passenger railway line that has a station right in the middle of downtown Monterey. Travelers can ride the train into Monterey from several different regions of California, then take the train home again at the end of the day. Once you have arrived at the train station, there are buses and trolleys available to take you to local destinations downtown. The train is the most convenient way to travel into downtown Monterey, especially if you only plan to stay for a day or two. It allows you to avoid parking and the hassle of traffic. You can choose your destination and then enjoy the ride while someone else gets you where you need to go.
