Dining in Monterey

There is only one way to describe the dining of downtown Monterey, one all-encompassing word to sum up this decadent city. That word is “fresh.” Any atmosphere, ethnicity, and craving can be satisfied with a simple stroll down the streets. Here are a few of the more popular eateries, but do not restrict yourself. Explore, experiment, and enjoy!

BRITANNIA ARMS

Who would have thought an authentically British pub could be found in downtown Monterey. The décor is nothing but British origin, the food mimics the usual delicacies of the country, and even the television screens play live soccer matches from the U.K. All this is in addition to the 24 beers and ales they have on tap and the multitude of single-malt scotches. The Britannia Arms is a popular meeting point for true British sports fans to the housewife in the mood for a drink.

While the dress and atmosphere is casual and laidback, this is not an eatery to bring the kids to. However, the food is as fantastic as the aesthetic appeal, so consider take out if a night in the hotel is in store.

EL PALOMAR

For a South of the Border flavor, El Palomar cannot be matched. The dishes focus on fresh seafood delights, but there is no lack of traditional chicken, beef, and pork recipes. However, El Palomar is one of the dining hot spots for vegetarians. Several dishes are specifically meat-free, while many others can be altered to accommodate each individual’s needs. Another appeal of El Palomar is the bar fully stocked with Mexican beers, a vast array of tequilas, and locally produced wines.

Quick tip for the tourist: try to visit El Palomar when the weather is comfortable for outdoor dining. The patio matches the spaciousness and beauty of the inside. Many other restaurants have outdoor dining, but lack the comfort that El Palomar reaches.

LALLAPALOOZA

When it comes to lavish atmosphere and larger-than-life portions, LALLApalooza reigns supreme with the martini as its king. Decorated like a 1920s prohibition speakeasy, this one-of-a-kind restaurant celebrates America’s unique history. The menu is comprised of steaks, salads, sandwiches, and a collection of martini recipes that would make James Bond proud. In the words of the literary critic, Bernard DeVoto, “the martini is the supreme American gift to world culture.” If that statement is true, it is always Christmas at LALLApalooza.
